When you step back for a moment and look at the Metropole Building on 2nd and Howard it isn't overwhelming. A three story brick with residential up and commercial below. A simple formula that has worked for this building for probably the past 100 years. On a tip from a reader, we dropped by the other evening to see what had been happening. Apparently lots.
Situated next to the Interplayers and near the future (hopeful) site of 153 S Wall by Prium, there's already quite a bit of activity. Upstairs, the tired apartments are being updated, refinished, and are ready to rent,
while down below a new Yoga Studio (Twist) and a hair salon (Ruby) were in full swing when we stopped in. We remember not so long ago when this place sported a barber shop, printer, florist and the Cozy Inn-perhaps downtown's last old school tavern. Times change, though and it's nice to see the Metropole getting spruced up again. It deserves it.
That's one of my favorite dream spots for a community cycling center in the city. That corner place where the florist was... I can see it. The building hooked to on the west side is apparently looking for a life. I've heard it's owned by the BIA?
