This news is just sad, sad, sad for Spokane. Without Trader Joe's, I'm just not sure we can really reach our potential as a City :) Oh well, there's always Wal-Mart.

I caught wind from the Huckleberries Online blog and somebody mentioned that Spokane was not chosen because is wasn't "visually appealing." I find that one hard to believe. Trader Joe's has stores in towns that are a little uglier than Spokane or Coeur D'Alene for that matter (Think of Fresno or Burien!). Something else might have influenced the decision. It such a shame because Spokanites are missing out one of the greatest grocery stores out there.

My neighbor just returned from a weekend haul to TJ's in Seattle. For what it's worth, the manager of that store told him the company does plan to open a location in Spokane, and possibly Tri-Cities, sometime in 2008. He said the delay has to do with their business model and the need to negotiate the lowest price possible for space in order to pass on low prices to customers. Apparently lease rates in Spokane are just too high.

We figured it was less of a 'pass' and more of a timing thing. Location, price, as well as the distribution channel all play in the delay to siting a store east of the Cascades.

Well, it looks like I spoke too soon. My neighbor says the Seattle store manager's main point was that it often takes some time for TJ's to find the right location for the right cost. It was more like IF (not when) Trader Joe's plans to open a store in 2007, then it could certainly slip into 2008 if the deal isn't right. I had just emptied my bank account at Huckleberry's when I ran into said neighbor - I must have heard only the parts I wanted to hear.

I heard today from a commerical real estate developer in Spokane that TJ has not completely passed on Spokane for '07. It is just a matter of finding the right spot for the right price as others have stated

Spokane rents too high? Please, TJ's is all over the Seattle area where rents are twice as high.
