On a drive through West Central today, we spotted this interesting neighborhood marker indicating the entrance to the historic Nettleton's Addition. Sited on a corner of Dutch Jake's Park, this thing must have popped-up over the weekend as we were just over here the other day and certainly couldn't have missed it.
Not satisfied with the usual frilly signs that signal the entrance to
other neighborhoods, the community over there has really come up with
something unique. It's big, solid, and screams industrial. Looking at the
footing and the bolts anchoring this thing, we're convinced it won't be
going anywhere too soon.
Pondering the inspiration for the sign (?) we're inclined to think the artist is commenting on the area's
ties to the rise and decline of a century of industry. West Central, and Nettleton's for that matter, was one of Spokane's more remarkable working class neighborhoods. Yeah, parts of it have been beat down over the years, but at this point we're seeing the beginnings of a turn around that is long overdue. We're looking forward to West Central reclaiming it's spot as one of Spokane's best.
