Forget crop circles...We spotted these cool rock stacks out near Coyote Rocks in the Spokane Valley. We've no idea who managed to construct these, but we'd like to thank them publicly for taking the time to create such an interesting though temporary piece of work. It certainly made a quick break towards the end of a long ride that much more enjoyable.

So who should decide how to time traffic lights—people at the local level who are familiar with Spokane streets, or voters statewide?
It’s the latter, if Tim Eyman has his way with I-985. Besides opening Westside carpool lanes to single occupancy vehicles—thus rewarding people who don’t carpool, use transit, or perhaps even (gasp) bike to work—and a bevy of other micromanagement traffic changes, I-985 reaches to the local level and tells cities to synchronize their traffic lights.
Question is, who are they to be synchronized for? One has to assume it will be motorists, not cyclists. Sigh.
Following up on Monday's post showing a time-lapsed view of development in the Spokane area, we found a new one. This time the visualization is of Wal-Mart's forty year jaunt across the United States. Using a similar technique to Trulia Hindsight and data of store openings, Flowing Data has created a time-lapsed version of Wal-Mart's forty year jaunt across the U.S. By 2007 nearly the entire eastern half of the U.S. is consumed. Fascinating work.

This is it Spokane. Last year we mentioned the PARK(ing) movement taking place in cities across the globe. This year it's bound to expand to even more cities all over, "this crazy blue ball we call home" (credit: Will Ferell). The event is scheduled to take place on Friday September 19th.

Get out yer calendars folks. This Wednesday, 8/6, the Main Market Co-op will be hosting it's first public meeting. The goal of the meeting is simple: share with the Spokane public what the Main Market Co-op is all about. You can expect details on what it means to be a part of a consumer cooperative, the benefits, the mission, and explanation of the planned educational opportunities. All of this followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

Welcome back...hope you had a good weekend. Since you might not be ready to jump into your work just yet, we've a cool little visualization for you. Via Trulia Hindsight, this visualization looks at residential property development in the Spokane area from about 1889 to 2006 and plots it in an animated progression. One dot equals one permit. The data isn't complete, but still manages to give you a sense for where residential development was taking place at a particular point in the time range. Fascinating. Do you recognize any specific patterns and dates?
The ridge line in Brownes Addition is nearly tapped out as far as vacant land goes. The latest addition to the collection of buildings there can be seen in the rendering above. To say that the swooping roof is its defining feature is an understatement, and it's easily the most modern of the any of the buildings in Brown's Addition. It's hard to say what the exterior will be made of, but it's possible more of the corrugated metal similar to the View down the street. The unit advertised is a north-facing 2 bed/2 bath going for $434K with a dumbwaiter to boot.
