Bank of Whitman: Street tree slalom course nearly complete

Tree0004 The fences surrounding the Bank of Whitman construction site have finally come down and the sidewalk is open once again.  The question we ask is who the hell thought this was a good spot for a tree?

We fully expect this thing to be limbed up to a single top branch by November.  Consider for a moment though IF it is allowed to grow for a few years, won't the tree canopy become an issue with roof...DIRECTLY ABOVE IT?  Wasn't there a moment when someone working with the landscaping plans thought, "Hmmm...this is the only tree were planting in the middle of the sidewalk, are these plans right?

From the buildier's website :

"With such a classically rooted yet innovative design and a site situated in the heart of the Downtown Spokane Central Business District, the Bank of Whitman Building is bound to have a lasting impact on the downtown skyline and greater Spokane community as a whole. The extravagant interior lobby is just one of the many features that sets this building a cut above the rest."

Please add, "The pedestrian experience around the building will be enhanced by random plantings of trees in the right-of-way."

Maybe the Management of the Bank of Whitman thought it might provide a morale booster for the employees to watch people walk into the tree during the day? :)

If they really wanted random, the trees should be random, not lined up! There is no challenge walking down this sidewalk with only one tree in the way!

after seeing your more recent post on the oil barrels, this gives me an idea of forming a guerilla street crew that plants young trees in the sidewalks like this one. the cause, of course being some sort of rainforest thing.
